Since 2017, "Roam Like at Home" lets Irish customers use their domestic allowance across the EU and EEA. That's genuinely good, and for a weekend in Lisbon on a generous bill-pay plan you may not need anything else. But there are four situations where people come home to a surprise bill.
1. Fair-use caps
Operators are allowed to apply a fair-use limit to EU roaming data that is lower than your domestic allowance, especially on unlimited plans. If your plan says "unlimited" at home, the roaming cap is often a fixed number of gigabytes. Check it before you go.
2. Prepay plans
Many prepay bundles include only a few GB of EU roaming. Once that's gone, you're on pay-as-you-go rates per megabyte.
3. The UK, Switzerland and Turkey
None of these are in the EU roaming zone. Some Irish plans include the UK as a courtesy; others charge or cap it. Switzerland and Turkey are charged at "rest of world" rates on almost every plan.
4. Everywhere outside Europe
USA, Canada, Dubai, Thailand, Australia, Ghana, Nigeria: these are rest-of-world zones. Irish carriers sell daily passes (which add up fast over two weeks) or charge per megabyte, where a single evening of Instagram can cost more than a week-long eSIM.
The maths for two weeks in the USA
| Option | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier daily roaming pass | €3–€10 per day → €42–€140 | Often with a small daily data cap; auto-renews each day you use data |
| Pay-as-you-go roaming | Per-MB pricing; 1GB can exceed €100 | The "bill shock" scenario |
| Airport SIM | $30–$60 | Queue, passport, and you lose your Irish number for the trip |
| Vibqo USA eSIM, 10GB / 30 days | €7.63 | Keep your number, install before you fly |
Carrier prices change frequently; check your own plan's roaming page for current rates. Vibqo prices shown are from our current catalogue.
How to decide in 30 seconds
- EU/EEA destination + bill-pay plan with a big allowance → use your plan.
- EU/EEA destination + prepay or small cap → eSIM from €1.70.
- UK, Switzerland, Turkey → check your plan; usually eSIM wins.
- Anywhere else → eSIM, nearly always.
